Three biological parents?
I was reading about this child born to 3 biological parents through science.
This couple couldn’t conceive because all of the woman’s eggs had something wrong with their mitochondria
So, they took the mitochondria from another woman’s egg cell put it into the egg with the bad mitochondria thus resulting in a child born to 3 biological parents.
..that is quite incredible.. but what if this becomes super popular? What will it mean for our future generations when everyone has 3 biological parents?
I’m talking completely hypothetical. The chances of this happening in reality are small, but my mind went there okay.
I know next to nothing about genetics other than basic stuff. Would this hypothetical situation simply cause a larger variety of DNA to pass down to future generations or would it cause major problems? (I found out the answer to my question here. The answer is, well both. It could benefit people’s lives. People with mitochondrial disease would be able to have children and not pass their mitochondrial disease to their kids. Mitochondrial disease is rare, but it can be horrific. It could potentially completely eliminate mitochondrial disease but it also posses risks of chromosomal abnormalities. So it can help people but it can really hurt them too.)
Right now I’m reading that there’s only 30-50 people in the world with 3 biological parents, and that doing this has been banned in the US although I don’t really get why.
It was an ethical concern
Okay here’s a better explanation of how they do it and why they stopped
Eggs from a mother with unhealthy mitochondria and a donor with healthy mitochondria are collected
The nucleus, containing the majority of the genetic material, is removed from both eggs. The donor nucleus is destroyed
The mother's nucleus is inserted into the donor egg - it now has healthy mitochondria. The egg is then fertilised by the father's sperm
They stopped doing this because some of the pregnancies resulted in miscarriages due to chromosomal abnormalities
Holy crap I am finding some really interesting stuff. Some scientists were critical about this and called it a slippery slope to genetically modified humans. I am not the only one who thought of this even scientists said what if
If you want a link to know more, here it is.
I know they don’t work here but if you want to take the time to type it out, go ahead I know I can’t be the only one wildly intrigued. I would create a whole group for these topics
