Thanksgiving?

Question

American Thanksgiving is around the corner and with a rough year, I was excited to bring some joy and food into the house lol! 
But it's important to me to be hunest with my children. And I'm having the strings of morality pulling on my heart. Should we be celebrating? we plan on telling them real story when they are old enough to understand. They are still very very little. 
Is it still disrespectful if we change the meaning behind the meal/holiday?
Idk, I just want to do the right thing. 
I would love everyone's opinions of celebrating thanksgiving!

I like to have us learn about a new tribe every year on Thanksgiving. We survived in the country because of them and we owe them our appreciation. This year we're doing Shawnee, since some places are named after them where we live. Even found a half hour youtube video on them we can watch

We celebrate it, but not as a "pilgrims and natives" thing. We celebrate it as more like a harvest festival, which is common to many cultures and places in the world throughout history to celebrate the year and that we have enough to get ourselves through winter time.

I know you said your children are still small but I recommend the film “Gather.” It’s for 13+ but it’ll help younger generations understand the history behind Thanksgiving and the importance of food sovereignty for Native American communities. It’s a good film to watch around this time before we sit down at the table to be with loved ones.

I mean to me it has always just been a day for family and turkey/food. Growing up nothing else was really mentioned. I’m first generation American though, my parents came from Europe, and I think they just were just cooking/celebrating because they got the day off 😂

To me it seems Columbus Day is more problematic... Thanksgiving generally seems to be more about giving thanks for family/a good harvest/full food storage for winter. As I am not Native/Indigenous I will not comment on how they feel, I grew up in an area that has a history of Natives and learned about the different tribes and some (obviously whitewashed) history of the area in elementary school.

We will not be celebrating this year. After hearing from the indigenous people I went to college with, it would hurt my heart to still celebrate. You can say it’s for giving thanks and all that crap but I feel there needs to be a new date with that meaning attached and you can literally be thankful any other time of the year. Everyone can collectively agree to make a new holiday surrounded with thanks and family and food, but thanksgiving, a horrible time in history doesn’t need to stay just because of ‘tradition’.
And I don’t wanna hear that it’s not that deep cause it is.

We've always celebrated it as a time to be thankful and to spend time with family. With the exception of me and my sister bringing home Pilgrims crafts in grade school. 
Just decorate more generically *autumn* if you think certain decorations communicate the things you don't support.
