Would you have a saviour sibling if your child had a potentially fatal illness?
A saviour sibling is a baby that is born to provide your existing child with an organ or stem cell transplant to save them from fatal diseases eg cancer.
They tend to be conceived via ivf to guarantee they are a match.
Do you think this is wrong? Or would you do it if it were the only way to save your child?
Is it cruel to the child who is being conceived with this sole purpose?
Another scenario- if you already had a sibling who was a match for an organ such as a kidney, would you ask your child to donate to save their sibling? Or do you think that’s too much psychological burden to put on a child who has some level of understanding?
Is it ok to take whatever you need from a baby when they’re too young to remember? I suppose the issue here is consent.
There’s so many factors to this I can’t even begin to think of them all and it’s definitely not a black and white issue. Interested to her your thoughts.
