To buzzkill or not to buzzkill? Thanksgiving edition
(Entirely hypothetical question. No large gatherings in Covid 2020!)
You’re sitting at a large family Thanksgiving dinner. A family member makes the remark “I’m so thankful the Native Americans and Europeans came together on this day so many years ago.” Do you correct their historical inaccuracy - probably buzzkilling the entire dinner... or do you keep it to yourself and quietly eat your mashed potatoes?
Just for reference, this is the common narrative American children are taught in school. The real story is much different however. European Colonists never extended an invitation to eat to the Natives. When the Wampanoag people heard the colonists celebrating, they originally thought they were preparing for war. The Chief instructed his tribesmen to hunt deer and turkeys when he realized they were actually celebrating. The “First Thanksgiving” was also never a peace treaty. Twenty years after the fact, Colonists were still massacring Native people.
