Health insurance isn’t covering NICU???

I just opened up our NICU bill and want to throw up. I have amazing health insurance (I’m a teacher and our union has fought for amazing health insurance). Our daughter was admitted to NICU for jaundice after being discharged after birth. I get the bill today...$13,100. It says “self pay ins” under insurance coverage (see pic below). Does self pay ins mean they processed it wrong and didn’t put me in as having insurance? Or is self pay ins mean I pay for my own health insurance? I’m so confused! Obviously I’ll call tomorrow am, but right now I’m freaking!!!

They didn’t bill your insurance. You can log into your insurance portal and see if it was sent to them. I work for a healthcare organization and deal with this first hand. Based off the image you posted I would say they don’t have your insurance on file or missed it and accidentally set it up under self pay.

Call the hospital and tell them to redirect the bill to your insurance. I had to do that when my second daughter was born. She didn’t have insurance when she was born so they obviously billed her. I called and told them she was going to have insurance and they need to redirect the bill.

Call them and provide your insurance info it appears they don’t have it. Only pay your portion after receiving an EOB from your insurance company showing they were billed and paid their portion and explaining why you owe what you owe (deductible, coinsurance etc).

Wasn’t on your insurance when they were born. First call your insurance then call the hospital billing. It can take a while for billing and insurance to catch up

I would make sure the hosptial billed your insurance first. Its doesn't look like they did because they have you done as self pay. Most times when a baby is a few weeks old, they are assumed to have no insurance . However most insurances cover your baby under mom (you) for the first 30 days of life. If they say they didn't then I would follow up with the hospital to make the necessary changes and send the claim (bill) to the correct party. Quick fact:when you do add your baby onto the insurance (most times) their coverage is back dated to their DOB. Either way it should be covered. But your insurance can't pay a hospital that hasn't filled a claim.... so you have to follow up with them first.

Is it possible she wasn't added to your insurance yet when they billed you? I was charged for a few things and it was because my son wasn't added yet. I also had the issue where they didn't bill my insurance because they did not just assume he was on the same policy as me.

You can have them send the bill to your insurance or many times you can send a claim directly to your insurance provider yourself via their website if the hospital refuses to.

Do you by chance have Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield?   I have them and several times recently they've denied claims, saying they need me to verify that I don't have a second insurance, and they don't notify me at all about this.   So I get the full bill and then have to sort it out myself.

So I don’t know if you got this all taken care of or not, but when I got the bill from my son’s birth they didn’t charge my insurance. I called the hospital and they told me why - because my SON was the patient and he didn’t have insurance yet. 🙄
They switched it over for me right after that and everything worked out!
