Would you carry on the middle name Anne if it’s been passed down for 6 generations?

Variations of Anne has been passed down on my mother’s side of the family for 6 generations. Somehow, I JUST found out about this at 30... for some reason I was never told this before. I always felt like my middle name was so generic but knowing now that it’s a passed down name I’m debating passing it down to my daughter who is due in April. I’m conflicted now since I felt pretty set on passing down my last name as her middle name but I now like the fact that it’s been passed down on my mother’s side for so long... ugh I just don’t know.

Middle names are for honouring family, friends and traditions. I would love if I had a sixth generation name to pass on and wouldn’t even think twice. You pretty much have to!

If you like it enough and it goes well with the first name you choose, then fine. But if nobody even talked about it it seems like maybe it’s not actually that important in your family. I wouldn’t feel bad breaking it. Maybe you have other people in your family who could pass it down

It’s okay to break from tradition! And I think passing down your last name as her middle is still a great way to honor your side of the family. My dads name has been in my family for 3 generations now but I hate it and have made it clear it’s dying with my generation 😂

My first name is hyphenated with Anne (family tradition passed down for who knows how long). Growing up I always hated it and ended up dropping the hyphen on official documents. It didn’t even occur to me to continue the tradition that I loathed so much when my daughter was born. She’s got her own beautiful middle name that is completely her own (and not hyphenated). It just comes down to how you feel about the middle name, but I wouldn’t put extra pressure on yourself to keep up a tradition of you don’t like it.

Ann is one of those names in my family too. I’ve decided if we have a girl her name will be Oakley GraceAnn. My mom and my older sisters middle name is Ann and my little sisters middle name is grace. So I get to include all my important girls in one name
