I think my toddler is racist. 🤦‍♀️
Not necessarily racist, but I think she is frightened by people who look differently. Sigh. Hear me out, and please keep your hateful comments to yourself.
My daughter is 23 months old. Today I realized we had an issue. Her favorite show is The Wiggles. Yesterday when the guest wiggle, the brown wiggle, came on...she started freaking out and insisted her dad fast forward through his song. I’m not sure of his ethnicity, but I think he’s from an island around Australia maybe.
Then today, I was upstairs making breakfast, and I hear her begin to scream and cry real tears. I go downstairs only to find the brown wiggle is on TV. I tell my friend, thinking it’s super odd she hates this wiggle. She says, “maybe she’s racist.” I laughed, because I thought “that’s absurd”, but then I realized...recently my niece visited and she had a black Barbie that scared the crap out of my toddler. I thought she just didn’t like that it was a mermaid. Sigh.
I feel terrible. We live in a new city and have no friends. We don’t socialize at all due to the pandemic. she doesn’t attend daycare. We are white, and that’s all she really sees I guess.
I need to expose her to other cultures, I guess. Does anyone have books or TV shows they recommend?
We don’t avoid any race, we just aren’t around people in general right now. I am so panicked. 🤦‍♀️
