I made a joke to my boyfriend whose name is Matthew. I said “you’re my second favorite Matthew” and he said whose your first?! And I said “Matthew McConaughey” (like the actor). It was a really dumb/not funny joke and I have been with my boyfriend for 7 years so I didn’t really think about it. My boyfriend got extremely hurt and is upset with me. Was I wrong?

I bet if someone posted the reverse of this, that their boyfriend told them they were the second best Emily or whatever, there’d be a ton of comments sympathizing with her and validating her feelings. Compared with pretty much only comments criticizing this guy. 
I think it’s reasonable for him to feel hurt, and if he’s a human you love, he should be comforted and reassured. 
No point in everybody making fun of him for having feelings, and for wanting to feel loved and valued.
