Wth am I doing

My boyfriend of 3 years broke up with me a month ago. Since then we have been in contact because he claims that he really wants to be my friend and he wants to be there for me. Our relationship ended because he felt like we weren’t good together, not because of cheating or anything severe. We do occasionally have sex. Well just now... we were having sex. After he came, I cried and told him that I loved him... he didn’t say anything back. I didn’t ugly cry, just a couple tears. And when he left, he just gave me a hug. I know that we’re not together but I love this man. I really want us to be together!! I don’t know what to do. He’ll obviously still be my friend regardless if we stop having sex but I don’t want him as a friend. This is the man I so badly wanted to marry... why can’t things just ever work out for me...
