What do I need for baby’s first few months sleeping next to me?

For my shower I received a graco pack n play and a halo bassinet. I’m having trouble finding a mattress pad that will cover the bassinet without bunching. So I’m wondering if it would be smarter to just return it and use the pack n play next to my bed when baby is a newborn. Bassinets are only used until they start rolling anyway and I’m wondering if I should just use the money toward something else we need. Is a pack n play by the bed safe? This one has a bassinet option. Halo bassinet necessary?

We have a 2 storey home, so we used halo bassinet next to our bed, and pack n play in the living room for naps

I loved my halo bassinet. Used it for both my kids. I loved that I could swivel it close to the bed and then swivel back out to give myself more room. No getting out of bed in the middle of the night. But is it strictly necessary of course not. 
You do need to get mattress and sheets that are designed for the halo specifically. Because of its shape you can’t just use other brands. Just Google for mattresses and mattress pads specifically for the halo and you’ll find lots. Target and various other retailers have them.

Hoenstly either is totally okay. I have a bassinet and a pack and play, the bassinet is going in my bedroom beside my bed and the pack and play is going in the living room for naps and stuff during the day 😊 you can use which ever you are most comfortable having your baby sleep in.

My baby hated the bassinet. Her crib is her fave to sleep in. Wouldn’t sleep in the pack n play either. Ha

We got an Arms Reach Cosleeper for baby #2 and it made a huge difference. It has 3 sides and open to the bed on one side. Baby has their own space but is still right beside you.

I did the pack n play pulled right up to my side of the bed. It worked fine. 
But baby wasn’t a huge fan of it. So I’d wait and see which one your baby sleeps better in?

The pack and play will work fine. Both my kids napped in pack and plays.
