Is he being selfish??

Long story short I’ve been out of work for a few months for personal reasons. I had to wait to buy him a Valentines gift. Today we were on the phone and he mentioned a gift he wanted for Valentines. I do want to buy him something meaningful but under $100 which is in my budget. I asked him and he mentioned a $300 pair of Jordan’s. I actually felt insulted. All he bought me for Valentines this year was wine and a necklace that tarnished....but I still appreciated it because it was from him and doesn’t have a lot of money this year. Is he being selfish asking me for a pair of shoes that expensive knowing I’m out of work right now and saving up for a car/college?? (He’s 21)
