“Them” on Amazon Prime

I’m so sorry if this is better suited in the Race/Gender/LGBT room. I read the CC rules and decided this post was okay. If you think it should be moved, I can do that. Also sorry if this has already been talked about. I couldn’t find any similar topics, then again the key word being “them” wasn’t helpful 🙄

I started watching Them on Amazon Prime, thinking it was similar to the movie Us. The more I watched it, the more horrified I was. I realized quickly that the “horror” in it was literally just the mistreatment of black people. The racism in it made me so physically and emotionally uncomfortable because it is super vulgar and raw. They drop the hard “n” word, imitate monkeys to a little girl, do graphic black face, etc. It was so, so cringe. I was sort of torn on it because on one hand, I was like....they are really using the mistreatment of black people as an entertainment concept in a horror story. I also feel like they went WAY too far with the racist components. On the other hand, I was thinking like okay, it is real shit and there’s no need to pretend like that didn’t happen. Maybe there’s a spreading awareness vibe? But then again, I was like no. They aren’t spreading any type of awareness, it’s purely for entertainment. My best friend is black and I messaged her about it and this is what she said:

I was wondering how other people feel about this. Did they take this movie too far? Is the concept in general not appropriate?
