Is this their business?

I’m a 22 year old college student still on my dad’s health insurance because I only work a student employee job that doesn’t offer insurance. I’m 265 pounds and 5’6 so I’m in the obese category. Today my mom told me that because I’m on my dad’s health insurance that he pays for, it’s their business how much I weigh and what I eat and they have the right to say I need to control my weight. Is this true?

I would usually say no, but insurance premiums can change based on the person's health it is covering. So depending on the type of insurance they have, your health could be a factor in them having to pay more for certain treatments and medicines. 
Insurances will do anything to nickel and dime to get out of paying for so many different things.

If your obesity is causing health problems and the treatments are causing their premiums to increase, yes, I think they do get a say. Just like if you were on their auto policy and got a DUI and caused their insurance to go up, they are absolutely within their rights to tell you that you may no longer drink. As soon as your actions impact someone else, they get a say in the matter.

Your health could be contributing to them having to pay more for certain things. I think you should be aiming for health on your own and not because your parents force you too as an adult, but if the financial consequences of your health is coming out of their pocket I would agree they have some sort of say. Especially if this has been going on for time and you haven’t been able to solve the issue on your own.

nope. they don’t get to control you or your body. your health is between you and your doctor. they aren’t trained in the medical field, they don’t get to tell you how to take care of your body. and they also do not get to pry into your medical records. those are confidential to you and your doctor alone. your parents have 0say whatsoever.

You might want to start taking their advice about your weight not because you’re on their insurance but because they love you and yeah girl you’re over-weight. The reason your mother gave was kind of silly but the truth is that they’re concerned.

Can we put insurance and money aside? They are your PARENTS. Maybe they are just trying to find a way to reach to you, help you, get you do something because they are concerned about their child?

if you don’t like it then get your own insurance, some insurance base their premium on your health so it can be adding a cost to what they already pay.

They technically can’t control that, but I’m sure they are very very concerned. And health insurance premiums can rise so to health risks, which you are risking your health.
I am about the same height, we should be in the 170 range, and that at a high end. Google health insurance and body weight. 
If you’re interested in a lifestyle change, even if surgery is a consideration down the road or not, I highly suggest IF. Some women in my group were about to do surgery and have lost 100+ lbs in the last year by hard work and dedication. I know it’s easier said than done, but you can do it! Believe in yourself ❤️

I mean this depends on a lot of factors. Are you experiencing health problems due to your obesity? Are you leading an active and healthy lifestyle? Or are you eating poorly, not exercising and that’s leading to health problems thus raising your insurance premiums. Or are they receiving bills for your medical care that you’re not technically responsible for because you’re not the guarantor of the policy? Do they buy your food? Do you live with them?

If you’re over 18, Dr is an allowed allowed to tell your parents anything, unless they are buying the groceries, that’s the only way they’re gonna know what you’re eating, if you want to lose weight, make better choices with food, move your body, make sure you’re sleeping enough and hydrated. Sleep is a big one, when your lack of sleep happens, your body releases hormones that make you bloat, make you crave, make you binge eat, etc. So make sure you’re getting enough sleep, hydration is also a big one because that plays a part when you’re well hydrated, you don’t crave the sweets like you used to, your taste buds change, and what you used to like, like me I used to go gaga for Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and I only got them very rarely because they were far away, and the last time that I had them, my thought was ehh they’re not that great anymore,￼ my taste buds changed, I no longer have any desire to eat them anymore, I eat better, I’m the girl who loves and crave zucchini, that was never me, I was the girl who would tell government secrets for cookies, and candy, the ice cream man with my best friend, he would stop and wait for me to come down the stairs, because I got ice cream every single day, it’s finding alternatives, I don’t eat a hot fudge sundae, I’ll have reduced sugar and calorie ice cream,￼ and I noticed that because I drink more water, what used to be appealing to me no longer is, or it’s too sweet and I don’t like it, but definitely hydration, and sleep are the biggest two you need to start with, self-care, making sure that you are taking care of yourself, emotionally, mentally, remember things can’t grow in poisoned soil. You need to be emotionally and mentally working on your growth, and letting go and cutting out the bad thing that affect you psychologically and emotionally as well as physically. My mother is a narcissist, I had to learn boundaries, I had to learn not to care what she thought, even after I lost 100 pounds, she still called me fat ass every single day, there’s no winning with her, it’s she Hass to be right, she has to get her way, and she’s learning that I don’t give a fuck, when she starts on her rants, I stare out the window I pay no attention and I couldn’t care less and I tell her I really don’t care, I don’t validate and I don’t let her get me upset, I don’t let her affect me anymore. She’s looking for a fight and argument, she’s looking to tear me down, she’s looking to the bitch basically. I don’t let her. I go to my happy place in my head￼￼. She can’t break me down, she can’t win, and she can’t mess with my head anymore. Just eating better, moving your body, taking care of yourself drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and you’ll see a difference, in your clothing, the way you feel, your mental health, etc.￼
