Alternative to cow milk at one?

Question

What is the reasoning behind baby needing cow's milk after one? I want to stop ebf at one, but our family is dairy free. I do give LO dairy right now like some yogurt and cheese, bc I don't want him to develop an allergy, but don't like the idea of giving him straight cow's milk. Do some people offer almond milk or a vitamin instead? Thanks!

We don’t really do any milk, just make sure our kids get a ton of water and eat a healthy diet

Soy has the highest fat and calories and bang per cup so to speak. Oat is my second, not as much nutrition but better for the earth (requires 8x less water to grow and harvest). Almond milk has surprisingly little nutrition.

Totally can do alternatives! They only need about 8oz of dairy a day including yogurt and cheeses.

Hemp milk is the closest to cows milk. You can make it at home with hemp seeds ( Costco) and water in a blender. Or you can also buy like you eould buy soy milk which is a good alternative.

I believe doctors want cows milk given for the calcium & fat content, but you can get that through other foods.  We are mostly dairy free as well. I gave my daughter Ripple brand milk, which is pea protein.  I’ll likely give my son the same.  Definitely do your research to see what type of milk is most similar to cow’s milk & which is widely available in your area.

Of course you can give other milks! Cows milk is only one option. Lots of people chose almond, soy, pea, goats milk - they all have different amount of fat and proteins though so just make sure you’re looking into that when you make a decision :)

I'm doing soy. My first two kids had extreme constipation after switching from breast milk to whole milk. They briefly drank soy milk. It didn't cause them constipation but they didn't really like it so then we just started doing yogurt and cheeses instead. 
I'm probably going to immediately start this one on soy milk at a year, if I do milk at all.

I think soy is probably the most nutritionally sound alternative. 
Almond is actually the least nutritious of the milk alternatives. So I wouldn't push that. 
Whole milk is pushed because many women stop breastfeeding or stop formula at 1. So the baby needs an alternative that has lots of fats and stuff. Because they need it for good brain development
