1% Milk for toddler?

We are in a financial crises right now and to have to keep buying milk every 3 days gets expensive. My son is 19 months (weighs 45 lbs) and drinks A LOT of milk still. I normally purchase whole milk but because we are struggling financially I went to my local elementary school and they donated some milk in the little cartons but they are 1%. I've been giving it to him but he doesn't seem to enjoy it as much but the nice part is that he is eating more food! I am going to talk about it with our doctor of course but just wanted to see if anyone else has given low fat milk to their little ones.

If you’re going through a gallon of milk every 3 days with just one kid that is too much milk! 16oz is around the average milk consumption after 1 year. 
Try offering milk only at meals and offer water all other times he is thirsty. You want calories to becoming from whole foods at this point over liquid calories.

If he’s eating other food then you don’t need to give him that much milk. He may throw a tantrum and cry but just quit the habit. If he’s eating well and weighs that much then honestly he doesn’t need more than 10 oz a day of milk, if even that. Milk is not necessary at this age if they are getting nutrients from other sources. So to answer your question, don’t give 1%. Just cut back the milk all together.

That seems like too much milk. Put that age, our son had milk with each of his three meals and his afternoon snack. We used a 360 cup, so he 6-9oz depending how full it was.

We did 2%. My pediatrician told us to just give him whatever milk we drink. But definitely ask yours 😊

If you’re able to feed a high fat diet (cheeses, nut butters, fish, etc), it’s fine to go with 1% milk.  If not though, then I’d apply for wic so you can get whole milk
