Can I give my son a binky at 11 days old? Please read description :)

Question

My son will be 11 days old tomorrow and is being circumcised. He’s very orally fixated and has even started sucking his thumb occasionally, although it’s just for a moment or two. I’d really like to be able to soothe him with a pacifier if needed. Breast feeding is going very well and I’m just wondering if it would be okay to start with the pacifier tomorrow.

I gave my boys a pacifier in the hospital. They did well with it and it didn't affect nursing at all. Totally up to you when you want to introduce it to your little one

I personally prefer to wait 4 weeks to give a pacifier to make sure breastfeeding and my supply are well established first.

My baby girl was in the NICU for 5 days after birth and the nurses gave her one... Her very first pacifier. 
She's 4 months old now and has already outgrown them. Much more interested in her dumbbell rattle and dino teether.

If your not able to give a bottle I would definitely encourage you to give him a binki for the circumcision. I would even see if it helps before you go for the procedure. They don’t feel the cutting but they feel the shot they use to numb them before. My boy did great partially because I timed his feeding and made sure I had a binki and a bottle ready for him.  I didn’t nurse, just pumped.

I gave both my babies the paci in the hospital and it didn’t affect breast feeding at all. It didn’t create any nipple confusion either. I personally preferred to give the paci to babies from day one because it reduced the chance of SIDS. We just stayed in top of it as the babies got older…once they start reaching the age of talking we started to give it less often as it can hinder their speech they will be too busy with it in their mouths to want to talk or learn to talk. And right away at 1yo we took away the paci and the bottle. Actually we started at about 11months to be out of both at the one year mark.

I gave my son a pacifier at 2 weeks and it personally was a horrible decision. He is 4 weeks now and we are still trying to correct his latching. I’m having to see a lactation consultant to help fix it. I cut out the paci at 3 weeks. I know some babies have no issues and others ,like mine, have a big issue with nipple confusion. Sucking on a pacifier is a different sucking motion than the one to suck on a boob

I have been trying since we got home from the hospital but neither of my breastfed babies would take them. My son wouldn’t take one until he was weaned, my current little is a month and refuses it as well

My son took a paci day 1 as he was in the NICU and it didn’t impact our breastfeeding relationship. Eventually he naturally started to reject it though for me.

I’ve given my babies a paci since day one. My son was actually in the nicu and was given one without them asking me. My daughter never had an issue with latching but my son didn’t know how to nurse but that was from the nicu stay not the paci.
