Changing a foster child’s name
I know a foster mom who has been fostering a little boy for the past year. She picked him up from the hospital a few days after he was born. She shared this journey on social media, pictures, his name, etc. He is a little black boy and had a name common in African American culture. However, this foster mom (who is white) didn’t like it and she changed his name (not legally) to a very standard common name in the top 20. She only refers to him as this name, his daycare refers to him as this name, he does not know his legal name at almost 2 years old. The court system and her case worker all ok’d this, but to me it feels wrong. I feel like she zapped him of his culture and heritage and where he came from without his consent. There is no formal plan of adoption, just continued fostering while his biological mother works on her issues. I do not think name changes in the foster care system should take place unless the child is old enough to request it. What do you think?
