Insistence on "Western" thinking.

I bought my husband some books of his choice today for a late Father's Day present. These are the books he chose.

He posted the picture on social media and almost immediately someone who allies strongly with what I will call white, evangelical conservatism came in with admonishments not to fall for this "Marxism" and how false it all is, while recommending a laundry list of appropriately "safe" books that he defined as Liberal Western Rationalism ("Classical Liberalism").

What do you suppose drives this fear of reading and possibly entertaining other points of view that may not be considered "western" or "western enough"? I know racism is a big part of it, but the resistance to black and other voices that question and even undermine the dominant western narrative are rejected out of hand.
