Where to put stair gates?

We are moving soon and wondering where to put our stair gates. 
We have an 8 year old son, 1 year old daughter and another daughter due in September. 
My partner thinks the stair gates should go at the top and bottom of the stairs whereas I think the stair gates should go at the bottom of the stairs and our girls bedroom. 
What does everyone else do?

Definitely the top of the stairs, we also have a pressure mount for the bottom of our stairs if we need it on.

I wouldn't want to chance baby falling from the top of the stairs

We have them at the top and bottom. We have a front and back staircase.  Then our basement stairs are carpeted and can also be closed off with a barn door, so we didn’t bother with those stairs.   I will say—I tripped and fell all the way down one of our stairs and we are pretty sure I tripped on the baby gate. I was 7 weeks pregnant at the time, ooof.

Top and bottom of stairs. I wouldn’t add a gate to a bedroom for safety’s sake. That doesn’t sound safe at all.

I would do her door and the bottom of the stairs. But my daughter doesn't walk around upstairs unless in her room (with us with the door shut anyway).

A 1 year old shouldn’t be up the stairs unsupervised. So I’m saying kids room and the bottom of the stairs.
