Best way to sleep train an 8 month old?

She is up every 2 hours or so and we are extremely sleep deprived

I have 2 questions here:
- do you know why is she waking up every 2 hours? is it just a habit? Or maybe the air is too dry/she's too cold/ too warm? 
If it's a habit - it should be doable with just being there for her for a moment, saying calm "it's ok, it's night, now we sleep" and stroke her.. don't turn the lights on, don't sing, don't talk too much, even breath slowly like you would be sleeping. (I hate this Ferber method, I find it cruel, so I mean- staying there as long as she needs to give her sense of security)
But first check- if it's maybe something disturbing her...
Or maybe she's hungry? Maybe give her something after dinner? 
- how long does it go now? If it's just for teething- let it be. It's hard and annoying but she's in pain/discomfort so be patient...
