Is this normal for a child dr appt?

When we went to the doctor when we were little like 6-8 my mom would always make us get a vaginal exam. It was so weird because the doctor would just feel around down there and then say everything is normal. I’m still so confused by this and I’m in my 20’s.  No idea where to post this topic

I remember getting it checked. it was just a quick spread of the vulva and done. I think they stopped when I was like 5 or 6. I never had a vaginal exam until I went to the GYN. I know vaginal/vulvar adhesions can be common in babies/toddlers/young children. Kids can also get yeast and bacterial infections just like adults. It’s also a way to see any trauma or abuse in kids who might not be able to verbalize it.

Yes it’s normal, but it’s usually just a quick spread to get a quick look and that’s it. My daughters doctor does it as a routine check up, she lets us know beforehand and explains to my daughter what’s going to happen and that it’ll be fast. It’s pretty standard, I’m pretty sure they check boys testes too

My daughter’s (age 2) pediatrician looks but doesn't touch. All she does is pull back her underwear for a second to look.

Perhaps your mother was worried about missing signs of abuse? Or concerned about yeast infections? With my kids, The doctor always looked into the diaper until potty training age, just to briefly to check hip pulse or rashes, but not to conduct vaginal exams at 5-6......

Its totally normal to look and spread quickly to check for several things, not just abuse (although that’s definitely one of the things we are checking for). We also check in little boys too. It should take no more than 30 seconds and a parent should always be in the room.

Was it a full vaginal exam with your legs up or was it more of feeling your ovaries and looking or briefly examining? I’ve been getting Pap smears since I lost my virginity, before that my doctor would let me know they are looking to make sure there isn’t any visible issues. I have a strong maternal history of ovarian cancer starting as young as 25.

When I would go for checks up my doctor would look but she never actually touched unless I or my mom stated something was wrong.

I don't know where it falls in the normal scale but it's not totally abnormal as children can get yeast infections amd UTIs as well.   I don't recall that being part of a normal physical with my ped when I was little but I know if there's cause for concern they will.
