Social construct to keep women from embracing their sexuality and becoming *gasp* "sluts". It's super messed up and I hate it.

Because the concept was created in order to help maintain legitimacy of parentage in a time when your bloodlines meant everything. A woman gets the positivity of KNOWING she's the parent of a child, men do not. Hilariously, it is estimated that a huge number of men always have been (and still are) unknowingly raising children who don't biologically belong to them. In short, it's a social construct created to control women that still lingers to this day - meanwhile a man's virility and masculinity is partially seated on how many women he is capable of bedding.

Because our society is messed up. It's a throwback to a time when women were property of the men in their lives rather than individuals in their own right. A woman who wasn't a virgin was thought of as 'damaged goods'.

Idk But my virginity was important to me, losing it to someone special was important to me.

Because a woman is property, if there's a possibility she's not carrying her husband's child, he doesn't have an heir. Men can't get pregnant, so nobody cares how many holes they stick it in. It's sexist bullshit.

I think it's dumb, probably a result from a mixture of cultural forces. However, I think it's dumb because men's virginity should also be valued.

I think it's a societal thing that goes back really far. Women were promised to men by their fathers & it was an expectation she was a virgin when she got married or else there was something wrong with her. It was like she had a disease if she had sex before she got married. It certainly isn't like that now, but I think the value on a woman's virginity still remains from that time because men are pigs and haven't really changed much in four hundred years. Well, most of them, anyway.
