At what age will you let your children play outside in the yard?

I have an older son and when he was younger, I started letting him play outside without me in the freshness back yard when he was about four. I see all these parents in the news getting arrested for that kind of thing, and now I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this baby. Is it really that awful to let a kid play outside without someone hovering all the time?

I said something about this on Facebook and people started tearing me a new one. I just remember when I was a kid, my mom used to shove me out the door as long as the weather was nice enough. Now people are being arrested for letting their kids go to the park. It's crazy!

My nine year and 2 year always play out side on sunny days. I sit outside unless I'm doing house work but the windows are always open.  They know they have to stay out front. Unless I'm out.

....wait people get arrested for this? I let my son out in our fenced back yard at 2 with me sitting on the porch watching. ...... at 4 i let him play with me inside windows open and our dogs in the yard with him.  At 6 he was allowed outside alone but i checked every 15min.

I let mine outside at about 4 but was with them. I should also note we  live in the country. Probably in the city i would say like 6

It depends on the child and where you live.  We are in the city with nosey neighbors.  And no fenced in area.  = no go for us.

I think it depends on how comfortable I am with where we live, my kids and how he acts, my neighbors and what type of fence and backyard we have. I'm pregnant right now and a first time mom so I really don't know yet

Depends on the neighborhood among other things. I always lived on military bases so the kids roamed all around the neighborhood as young as 5.
