I never spank because I have self control and know the research that tells us time and again it’s not effective. However, it’s not always under the umbrella of gentle parenting. I still use negative reinforcements, time out, etc. I personally find hitting a child to be abuse and find people who do it to be ignorant.

Gentle parenting actually overlaps with authoritative parenting in a lot of ways!

A small pop on the butt isn't gonna hurt them at all. If I say no several times not to do something because they will hurt themselves even after explaining why I said no then I gently pop the butt gets their attention and they listen at that point. But that's for my family it don't work for everyone.

Here it has been illegal for more than 20 years to hit your children. I can't fathom how some adults think they can justify hitting children.

I have only “spanked” my child like 2x and when I say spank I mean I gave him a light pop on the booty. And the only times I’ve ever done that is when he put himself in danger and I wanted him to never do something again. For instance, he ran away from me in a parking lot. Other than those instances, we talk it out.

So, I chose “both” as my option because I practice gentle parenting but when it gets down to it and my son just isn’t listening, I’ve lightly popped his hand or his butt more so to get his attention because he wasn’t listening. Most of the time I just remove him from whatever he’s messing with and explain why or I remove the item he’s messing with and explain why. Idk if that is considered “spanking” but if not then cool.

Honestly, most of the time, my kids are very well behaved. They're 4, 3, and 15 months. My 3 y/o and my 15 m/o always listen to "no" even if the 15 m/o does it while running away and crying. And the 4 y/o almost always listens to directions and does as he is told. 
Most of the time, the discipline just fits the "crime." If they're playing inappropriately with a toy (throwing it, etc) the toy is taken away. My 4 y/o earns screen time for the next day by cleaning his room (the only reason I give a reward is because most of the mess is the 15 m/o and the 3 y/o but the 3 y/o is nonverbal and has autism and the 15 m/o is just learning to pick up) so if he refuses, which is rare, he just loses the screen time for the next day. 
On the rare occasion that it is something serious, like the 3 y/o hitting/pushing his brothers or the dog or the 4 y/o chasing the cat, then it is a time out. The 15 m/o is too young for that, of course. My 4 y/o has never hit the dog or either brother but had a brief period when he had to go to time out for chasing the cat. The 3 y/o went through a phase of attacking the 4 y/o and occasionally pushing the 15 m/o down when the 15 m/o tried to take a toy away from him and he got time outs. 
Time outs are the most serious punishment I give and they're only reserved for serious things like causing harm to each other. Time outs are in the corner in the hallway. 
I also do "quiet time" for the 3 y/o when he is throwing a tantrum (usually about sharing toys because he doesn't understand sharing.) But quiet time means he goes to his toy room for a few minutes to calm down. If his brothers are in there, I move them to the living room. He doesn't have to stand in the corner and is allowed to play with toys. But he has to spend 3 minutes alone. He has autism and sensory issues. He doesn't like being touched/hugged/kissed or having people stand too close to him. So quiet time is best for him in that situation.
