Society. Do we run society? Or does society run us?

For english lit, we were posed this question.  We are to write an opinionative essay on this topic.  I thought it would be a very interesting one to bring to the table of the controversy corner. What do you think? What's your views?

there is no "us" and "them". society is us we are society. there is no separation. if we're not running it, who would be.

Society began with us running it because it was such a small scale but with population booms and government changing from being genuine representation to being run by mainly disconnected rich (usually older, white) guys the representation has been lost. By now there are people who don't understand the normal struggles of working class populations running our countries and everyone has to stick with whatever they say. Grassroot movements that are taking back some of the power and politicians like Jeremy Corbyn and helping by being genuine people and sticking to their real values, taking part in communities and politics are important and a part of "us" running society.

Personally I'd take this from the "us" vs. "them" position regarding proportional representation of gender, minorities, class etc. in politics (I.e. Politicians do not represent us on the whole) but there are other ways of approaching it.
