Dates and LMP!?

Question

I’ve been doing some googling and I’ve read that a lot of women thought they were for example; 7 weeks pregnant and it turned out they were only 6.
If it’s based on your LMP how can it be off a week?
I googled because I have a scan in just over a week where I should be 7 weeks, it’s abdominal and I’m worried they won’t see much especially if I’m not even 7 weeks.
My scan yesterday the lady said I was around the 5 week area, according to my LMP and the online dates I should be 5+6 today. Yesterday I saw a yolk sac so I’m a bit worried.

LMP is really only correct if you have a “textbook” cycle. If you have a longer cycle and/or ovulate later, your LMP won’t be accurate in dating. 
My example is that we conceived through IUI. I did meds, trigger shot, and was followed by blood and ultrasounds- so I know I conceived on 10/19. However, this was day 20 of my cycle. So based on LMP, I would be 10+1, but because of when I ovulated and conceived, I am only 9+2 and that is also what the baby is measuring

Also depends on cycle length some doctors will adjust based on your estimated conception date

I completely skipped a period the month before I conceived and didn’t test yet and waited it out then the following month I skipped again so I tested and it was positive so based off my LMP I and my doctors thought I was 9 weeks and when I went in for my ultrasound I was only 5 weeks .
