How long do you have to stay in hospital after birth?

Can I stay for 24 hours? I have other kids at home and don’t have anyone to babysit for 2 days, only 1. Last time I gave birth I had to stay for 2 days. Can I ask them if I can get discharged earlier? (Planning to delivery vaginally if everything goes right) located in San Diego ca btw

Yes you can request an early discharge. I stayed 1 day after my vaginal births and 2 days after my c sections. But you have to be the one to request it, by law they cant even suggest it. Unless there is a complication with you or baby, they usually agree. The trick is, you should ask them before the day of discharge eg the night before, because they need your ob and pediatrician to sign the discharge papers during their rounds, which is usually done early morning, and the nurses need a heads up to get all the paperwork prepared early. So example my dr came like 7 am for his rounds and signed off that I can be discharged later that day after 2pm if all my bloodwork and pressures came back okay, so nurses ordered labs late morning and I went home that afternoon, a little more than 24 hrs after the birth.

I’m having a planned csection I plan to stay overnight and be checked out by the next night by request because I have another child at home, and recovering at home is easier than at the hospital to me anyways

It was a minimum of 36 hours for me. I was group B positive so it was required to stay to monitor the baby. Had I not been positive they would have allowed me to be discharged earlier. It also depends on the time of birth.

Where I live you can discharge 24 hours after birth (because they do blood work at 24 hrs) and we have done that almost exactly with each of my last two babies. So I think it would depend how long your labor ends up being.

they told me with Covid they are allowing mom & baby to go home at 24 hrs as long as we are doin fine. But i live in Pickens Sc so not sure how different Rules are.

It truly depends where you live and how bitrh goes.
I laboreid 26 hours at hospital, then had emergency csection, and baby had highrmer infection levels, so they kept us in 4 days.

There’s really honestly no way to plan how long you’ll be in the hospital because it entirely depends on how you end up delivering and how everything goes. Plan for 3-4 days and be happy if it’s less 🤷🏻‍♀️

I stayed 2 days with my 1st & 3rd, but only 1 with my second.
If you and baby are thriving, going home after 24 hours should be possible.
