Possible Alpha Thalassemia
Hi
So I am 12 weeks and this is my first pregnancy. I had routine bloodwork done at my first OB apt last week (blood type, sodium, sugar, all of that kind of stuff). So my results came back which I can see in my online portal. My iron came back low, which is not suprising, I have been told it’s low before. I have never been diagnosed anemic or anything like that. Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, MVC and MCH were a little low, which when i google all seem to be related to iron. Anyways, my results also say “ The red blood cell indices are suggestive of possible alpha thalassemia. The diagnosis is determined by clinical correlation, review of family history and exclusion of other causes of micro custodies and hypochromia, such as iron deficiency”. Does anyone know what this means or had the same thing. I called and ask the nurse about it but she just said the doctor would discuss the results at next apt (4 weeks away). Is this something I should be worried about. I have never heard of it before and when I google it, It’s not very helpful and I don’t want to worry myself with what I find.
Thanks
