UPDATE:Would you buy a house within 0.2 miles of a register sex offender?

Update: I scoured the internet and found another reputable website that gave more information on the offender. The charge was in another state, and he moved into the house he’s in now in 2009, the same year as the charge. The case was also against a 7 year old girl. I have called my realtor and told her what was going on and that we’re no longer interested in that house. If we stayed there for 3 years, our daughter would be the same age as the little girl he exposed himself to. Totally not going to risk that and always be fearful in my new house. Thank you all for all of the help working my mind through this decision! 
Husband and I have been looking for a year to buy a house. We finally found one we like, but I just found out that a registered sex offender lives 0.2 miles (2 minutes) away from the house. We can not see his house from our house, as it is around a corner. We have a 4 year old daughter, and another baby on the way. The neighborhood looks otherwise fantastic, and I could 100% envision my daughter playing with her neighborhood friends when she’s older, if it weren’t for the sex offender. We’re also not sure that we would stay in this house long enough for daughter to be able to play outside unsupervised, also. What do y’all think? This is our intended starter home, not our forever home.

I probably would. You can get labeled as a sex offender for things that I wouldn’t consider concerning too. I’ll post a picture.

Depends on the crime. If its violent crimes or anything against women and/or children than absolutely not. I think being registered has a broad range of offenses. Correct me if I'm wrong but peeing in public I believe is 1 way to become registered. So if it's something like that than I could look past it.

Honestly I might still get the house. I understand it says indecency with a 7-year old but honestly a charge like that is also very easy to get. My uncle ended up with a charge like that because he was publicly urinating and a child happened to walk by and the mother filed charges. He was camping and was going to the bathroom outside and a mom and child happened to be hiking. I’m not saying that is the case but honestly something that simple causes life long headaches in some cases (like my uncle). But like you stated it is a starter home and you don’t even think you’ll be there long enough for your child to be unsupervised. Just my opinion.

I would. Who’s to say one doesn’t move in once you’ve bought the house. A lot of registered sex offenders are charged with minor, low risk, minimally violence crimes. That’s why they’re not in jail.

If it’s just one then I wouldn’t be too worried. Now if there were a lot in the area I wouldn’t consider it. Can you try and look the person up on watchdog and see what they were charged with?

I’d look further into their charges. But I would also keep in mind that if you plan to resell relatively soon this may turn off other buyers just like it’s causing you to debate purchasing.

This is a very tough question. Whew I can’t say yes and I can’t say no. But since you said 2009 and nothing too recent I would kinda of look past it but then again I would feel uncomfortable in the neighborhood BUT there are pedos near me just not too close like is he on the same block as u guys? And is he following the rules? I know sometimes there are cases where pedos haven’t updated info with the cops or such if he’s cooperating still with the police I would consider it.. it’s just hard because there are pedos everywhere and some who haven’t been caught. Don’t let it take u away from getting ur home mama

Honestly if you have been looking that long and this is the only house you’ve found that fits everything you need for your family, I would look into the nature of the crime further. Many states have an actual court records website where you can see I he was charged with something more serious to start and took a plea deal, or you can make. FOIA request.
Because the fact of the matter is…you could find another house, move in, and someone who did hard time in prison for a much worse offense could move in right next door. And you may not even know it depending on whether your state requires notification be made to neighbors. The crime you’re seeing listed could easily have been he just urinated somewhere and a child happened to walk by, but you’ll never know if you don’t take the steps to find out. The truth is you could end up living mere feet from a sex offender at any point and have no choice. Why turn down what seems to be the only option you’ve had when you haven’t put in the effort to find the actual details

I know someone who is a sexual offender. But you can literally get a charge from peeing outside. You can definitely look up there charges by an address! Some people get wrongfully charged. Just statistically once they get caught more than likely they won’t do the crime again. But I understand what you mean! Lol the person I know he’s a good person! 💜 but it’s okay to be alert, I asked multiple times what happened and the story is still the same and adds up. They can also get charged @ a younger age like 18 and having sex with a 15 year old. But who knows now they can be 30. But that still sticks on their record. But yeah I’d take precautions too!
