Do you think public schools are dangerous?

So I was watching a podcast and someone on it made a statement that really got me thinking. He said most people who experience violence in their lifetime experience while in public school. Then me and my husband both realized for us this is true. We both have been in a violent situation while in school. (Being attacked, someone starting a physical fight). And if you want to go further most people who get extremely bullied, picked on, it happens in public schools.

I don’t believe for a second that most people who experience violence experience it at school. 
It sounds like more fear mongering about the public school system by a certain political party…. 
Ironically, the same party who is ok with convicted domestic abusers owning firearms, and other common sense gun laws 🤷‍♀️

Well, first of all, the issue isn't public schools, it's people. It will always be a people problem. Grocery stores, the park, concerts, sporting events, bars, your own house... they can all be just as dangerous. If not more in some cases. Secondly, I would take out the word "public" and just say schools. Because let's be real, all schools have issues and downfalls. It's not just public schools that have problems. So the answer is yes... but also no, not necessarily. I've personally never had any issues with violence or anything "dangerous" at school. My first experience in that department and every time after definitely came from outside of school. But that doesn't invalidate those that have different experiences, because I know lots of people that have had experiences more similar to yours.

I am doing my masters right now and my research is on trauma in education and yes, absolutely, 110%, schools are a source of trauma.

I think public schools are dangerous, yes. More dangerous than homeschooling my kids in a house full of firearms. Also, public schools are so washed and follow certain agendas. I haven’t decided if I’m going to homeschool or not.

There are way too many places to experience violence & trauma. Most of my friends dealt with violence or trauma in their homes. Mine was there & walking across streets. The private school kids bullied worse than public schools. They had "better than you" mentality shoved in their heads bc they went to a different school. Public schools aren't the problem. The refusal of the government to put more money into the education system & social programs is the problem.

No.  In our area the private schools have a higher prevalence of drug use among students and bullying.  Acts of violence can happen at any school unfortunately.

No, that’s a very narrow minded statement. Avoiding violence is a matter of privilege.
This happens in any school situation, public, charter or private- however, charter/private may have more resources to prevent violent situations.

No. I went to a public school and the amount of drama that you hear coming from private schools is crazy. The type of school doesn't dictate the calibre of person.

It' a society. I am from Slovakia and never experienced violence / harassment in public schools, even though a lot of them were underfunded. Moved to the UK, worked for a large private university and the sexual harassment and gangs were rampant.

The school 4 blocks from me in Buffalo NY just had a stabbing/shooting incident. A 17 year old stabbed a 14 year old and then shot the security guard. I find it very dangerous. We plan to homeschool because we don’t find a balance in the risk/reward. With that being said, I pass absolutely no judgment on those who enroll their children in public school. Parents do the best they can everyday and not all have the option for homeschooling.
