Does anyone else get bothered when
Someone has to ask or make comments like “he can’t talk?” “Does he speak Spanish?” “I can’t understand you buddy” “so and so at this age talked waaay more” etc.
Distant family members and strangers always have something to say or comment about my son’s speech and I’m gonna end up snapping one day. He got discharged from speech therapy in December because he was at the level he was supposed to be at and because the tremendous progress he had made. After finishing therapy he has still made HUGE progress. He obviously still has sounds he needs to work on but he have a very verbal toddler now and are proud. When someone (who he has never seen before) tries to talk to him, he wont answer because he’s shy and right away they say “does he talk? Shouldn’t he be talking by now?” Or yesterday at the grocery store the butcher was talking to him and again he didn’t want to respond so the guy said “what? He doesn’t speak Spanish?” (It’s frowned upon by a lot of people in our culture when kids aren’t bilingual which is bs) and last time my son wanted a candy and the owner/cashier said “my granddaughter is only 2 days older and she CAN tell me what she wants”. Like why are people like this??? I should also mention I didn’t find a bilingual therapist, which is why all his speech therapy was in English, it’s not that we don’t teach him. If you talk to him in either language, he fully understands both. As for speaking, he has a harder time saying Spanish words even though it was his first language. Like I said, he’s made huge progress and actually forms FULL sentences now, he went from “go park” to “Mom, I want go to park one day”, not clear as day but you understand 90% of the sentence! Ugh. I hate people
