Sex Toy in Marriage

I recently decided to purchase a vibrator/dildo for myself. I am married and when I told my husband about it he got very upset. I tried explaining the reason I bought one, but I think that made it worse. He says he feels betrayed, though I didn't buy it because I wasn't getting enough from him... if anything I got it to make our sex life better. What are your thoughts on having those kind of toys while married? He is very upset about it and I don't know how to fix the problem.. I offered to throw it away and apologized for not talking with him before purchasing. Any advice is appreciated.
