What exactly does it mean to sleep train?

FTM here with a one week old. Just wondering what exactly does sleep train mean?
Edit: I'm not planning on sleep train right now, I'm just wanting to see what it is as I hear people say it all the time but not sure what it is

I never sleep trained and my son started sleeping 8hrs straight at 4 weeks old. He's been a great sleeper ever since(other than a short regression at 4 months and I would just hold him until he fell back asleep during that time). He has always slept in his own room(where I can easily hear him) and had his own crib(just sheets and nothing else in crib). I think one of the reason babies sleep so poorly is parents keep them in the same room and noises wake up the baby.

Sleep training is something way to far away for you. Your baby is way too young and needs you too much right now. Our baby started sleeping better by himself around a year. I personally don’t like sleep training. I couldn’t stand to hear my babies cry for awhile

I don’t think you can sleep train a baby that young. First time mom due in May & I’m planning on implementing the pause method. Read/listen to the book “Bringing up Bebè”, the author goes into great detail about getting little ones how to sleep through the night.

Side note that you can’t and shouldn’t train a one week old. 
But there’s different methods to teach your babies to self soothe and help them to both be able to put themselves to sleep and to help them sleep better through the night.

I started “sleep training” around 8 weeks. Started with a bedtime routine I did around the same time (between 8-8:30pm) every night. Did a modified version before naps too. Started to try to put her down drowsy in her bassinet for 1-2naps a day. By the end of week 8 she was only waking 2x a night to feed. During the day she takes a couple 1.5-2hr naps and a couple shorter ones. Now she is 11 weeks and I use CIO for 3-5mins if she wakes up too early from her nap. When I put her down I put her down awake and pat her / shush her if she fusses before falling asleep.

There’s a huge spectrum of “sleep training”. I think a lot of people immediately jump to the most drastic which is thought of as an extinction method cry it out (leave your baby to cry until they fall asleep). I think that’s a very dated thought, and the sleep training I’ve seen includes just good habits and positive sleep hygiene that would help even an adult sleep better at night (black out curtains, ensuring you’re not reversing days and nights, white noise machine, etc). We followed along with some positive habits when our daughter was 4 weeks — no rules, no crying it out, just practicing and going with the flow (including breastfeeding on demand 24 hours). I recommend taking Cara babies for newborn suggestions, but didn’t feel comfortable with their more formal sleep training. Our daughter started sleeping 6-8 hour stretches by 3 months. We did more formal sleep training with a local consultant at 5 months to help with naps and getting on a consistent schedule. Since 7 months she’s slept through the night (she’s a year now). Best of luck, I know the first weeks are so exhausting it’s hard to even think straight, but it will get better.

Basically it means cry it out and let your kid fall asleep on their own. Which is pretty much what you do when they’re younger and you’re “sleep training”. When they’re older you can actually help them learn to put themselves to sleep with no crying. Or put themselves back to sleep if they wake up in the night. You can look up wake windows and there are multiple examples of how long babies should be awake and sleep for. If you follow these schedules eventually your little can figure it out. But yes not until they’re older!
