Dry shampoo (non-aerosol)?
I deal with excessive oil production and have for as long as I can remember. I have always suffered from acne and an oily scalp and was an every day hair washer. After dealing with chronic acne unresponsive to anything else, I did a round of Accutane last year. Obviously while on the medication my skin dried out, including my scalp. I only had to wash my hair once a week and even then I usually just did an ACV rinse and conditioner to refresh, it rarely ever needed a full wash.
Since stopping the meds, my oil production has gone back to normal (which I expected). My skin is clear, but I do have oil, especially on my scalp. I’m managing to only wash my hair every other day, sometimes can stretch it out an extra day but I feel gross when I do. I’ve tried multiple aerosol dry shampoos and I HATE them. I don’t feel they work very well for me and they make the texture of my hair feel awful.
Talked to my dermatologist a couple days ago and she put me on a medication to regulate hormones which can reduce the oil production, but she also told me I could try a non-aerosol, all natural dry shampoo. She said ones with arrowroot powder or clay might help. I’m having a hard time finding information on powdered, natural dry shampoos. Has anyone found a good one? I have a blonde balayage with light brown roots, so something that won’t leave white residue would be amazing.
To add: I know a lot of people suggest “training” your scalp to produce less oil, but my dermatologist very strongly urged against that for me. She said since my oil production is more hormonal and genetic, training it won’t work and could lead to clogged follicles/hair loss. She explained that my scalp is basically an extension of the skin on my face and compared training my scalp by not washing it to trying to “train” my face by not washing it…which is a thoroughly disgusting concept. So I’m not interested in going that route.
