What am I doing wrong

My 8 week old woke up from a nap crying so I picked him up but he still wouldn’t settle. Offered him my boob a couple times but he kept crying. So I thought maybe he had a dirty diaper so I placed him on his changing mat and he INSTANTLY stopped crying and made his ‘happy’ sounds.
His diaper wasn’t even dirty by the way so I know it wasn’t that.
I feel like such a bad mom because how and why would me lying him on his mat make him calm when I couldn’t calm him by holding him. Holding him just made it worse. Now I feel like he doesn’t even like me.

You aren't doing anything wrong, you are learning. My little girl (now 7 months) used to settle way better when I lay her down to kick her feet than when I tried holding or rocking her. Her older brother just wanted to fall asleep on the boob. They are all different and like different things. I used to think maybe it helped her move gas along, but you are responding to your baby's needs and that makes you a great mother. It's all just a bit of trial and error. ❤️

My little one is colicky (9 weeks) and for some reason she loves laying on her changing pad too and the bicycle kicks. It’s also super hard and frustrating. You definitely aren’t alone!

You are absolutely not a bad mom. My LO is currently 9 weeks old. She LOVES to lay down on her change mat too. Sometimes I don't pay close enough attention to her awake window and she gets overtired and starts screaming as soon as I lay her on her change mat to get her ready for her nap she stops. Why? Because they are the age where they LOVE faces. They are learning to coo and just love talking to you and laying on the change mat is optimal placement for this because they can see your face clearly. Keep doing what you are doing, Mama. The newborn stage is tough and exhausting won't last forever, try to focus on the little coos and smiles. It does get easier, I promise.
