Mother in law relationships

Sorry it might be a long story…

My husband and I have been together 5 years and married for 1 year. We were high school sweethearts.. ❤️

At first his mom and I didn’t talk to each other much. There were no issues, we just didn’t have a relationship. In the past year and a half I feel we’ve gotten a lot closer. I love my MIL as if she’s my own mother. I call her “momma-in-love” or just mom. I just feel guilty that we never talked before or even tried to. I feel like it’s more my fault then anything. I was always closed off around her.

I just wanted advice on how to get closer with her or communicating better with her.

And a reason I didn’t want to get close with her was because I’ve never had a good relationship with my own mother, I haven’t talked to her in 2 years and I never will again.
