How long after having a baby vaginally did sex stop hurting?

I am almost 3 months PP, I’ve been cleared at 6 weeks to have sex but my doctor said it may take a few months for the pain to not be as bad, but even now it feels like i’m tearing 😩 even with just fingers it hurts, it doesn’t seem right, I did have an episiotomy if that matters, just trying to see if this is normal or not! 
we have tried lube and lots and lots of foreplay

I had a second degree internal and external tear with both kiddos. About 8 week heal time for the internal layer of stitches. With my daughter it was very uncomfortable upon inserting for a good 6+ months. Some positions hurt way more than others. Like doggy because of so much pressure on that specific area. With my son it only hurt for a few months. He's almost 7 months old and now it's like it never even happened.
