so me and my boyfriend looking for an apartment and we can’t get approved for anything bc he got stuck on a lease and owe money after the apartment complex told him he was off of it.. i have no income as im pregnant and have complications this time so it’s just him.. and my grandma said she’ll put the apartment in her name (it’s actually a duplex) anyways, does anybody know anybody that has done this before or have you did it before? my grandma is scared she’ll get in trouble for it but i dont see how if they will be getting there money every month for rent & we won’t cause any issues as we have nowhere else to go and we will have 2 kids.. it’s not a section 8 housing or anything like that.

Yes, she can. If you are not on the lease and they find out you’re living there, it could be bad news - especially since she’s not there. Being a cosigner is one thing, leasing an apartment with the legal form stating she’s living there with no other adults is another. 
Also, subletting isn’t always allowed either so it may not fall under that.

It's called cosigning. 
Not to be mean but she must really love and trust you all to do so. If it were my grandma, I'd make my S/O sign an agreement that if he ever stopped paying or missed payments then he would pay my grandma back. 
Also, I personally would look at at hone jobs. There are so many of them right now. That money could go towards repaying what he owes on the previous apartment contingent they put it on his credit it is paid for then to also pay ahead on your current rent.

If she cosigns then yes it is okay, if she is the sole person on the lease and doesn't live there at all but you do yes she can get in trouble. It is a huge liability legally for the land lord of Sheila's to do that. There is a reason subletting is often illegal amd why some of itnis financial some of it is legal. Also if you live there basically illegally when you move somewhere else you have no rental history to use and haven't bettered your situation. Pay off the debt and see if grandma can legally cosign or even cosign with you only. But she is worried for a good reason. Landlords care about getting their money yes but they also care who is in their property and want the people who signed the lease to be the ones living there.

If utilities are not included she may have to also put those in her name. And Renters insurance could be required. Sometimes if you explain what happened, have a payment planned set up with the attorney who handled the old lease, and have first month's rent, last month's rent, and one month's rent for deposit; you can still get it in your names. Having children may help. And no pets. It takes time but that's life. I moved back to my families state after being gone 2 years and my ex (who I thought had me off his lease) was actually evicted. It took effort but within 3 months my husband and I were renting a place. Good luck!
