What better- a sling or a baby carrier?

If you were only going to get one or the other, which would you choose and for what reason? First time mum here.

The sling is way more versatile. You can carry the kid in different positions and there is no must you use a ring. I loved mine and used it all the time. The problem with the carrier is the weight distribution it has much more impact on your back then the sling when put on properly. Also the many different ways to wrap the sling enables you to use it from very small and much longer then the carrier. Just make sure you get one that is long enough.

Baby carrier put too much pressure on my shoulders and back. My arms and head would hurt at times cuz of that. Got a sling this time

I like the versatility of a sling. I have not used one yet but plan to with this baby. I always found the carriers big And clunky and in the way when I had them on with my kid so I didn’t use them much. However I have found men love them, my dad used all our carriers (slings were not big 14 years ago) with my girls a lot and my husband plans to use the carrier when this baby is born.

I think you should have a soft carrier for the newborn phase but I don't like ring slings, so I picked carrier. 
If I had to choose between a wrap and a carrier though I'd definitely choose wrap because I find I carry a TON in the newborn and infant phase but not so much as baby gets bigger.

I have one of each and a wrap.  I have a tula grow with me structured carrier and didymos wrap and ring sling. They are all useful in different scenarios. If you want convenience a structured carrier is nice.

There are carriers that can be used from newborn (like the Tula Free to Grow or the Ergobaby 360 with a newborn insert) but I personally found a ring sling to be the most comfortable and useful for the first few months, and then we switched to a Tula later for longer outings where I wanted to carry babe. She’s 16m and we still use the ring sling for short walks though (eg to daycare)
We also have a woven wrap which I liked to use when she was a bit bigger (3m+) and I was trying to get her to nap on me. It was more comfortable for me to have her nap in that than in the Tula.
Look on FB Marketplace, there are always lots of carriers and slings for sale secondhand, and decent brands are good quality and can definitely be used by a second family!

I like the carrier for outdoor, errands, outings and etc. Sling is good for inside the home and being causual

For what?
Ring sling is on one shoulder only, so at one point when baby is too heavy, then you might not want to use it. But you can start using it from birth, and with that you can carry a baby on your hip later also.
A carrier can not be used on a newborn, maybe month or tho later, because the legs have to fit in a correct M shape and none of the carriers for already, also those most advertised carriers might not get babys legs in M shape and that is dangerous for babys hip developement, but as it is unregulated area, you as a buyer have to know, what is actually healthy and ergonomic, because they are allowed to advertise their carrier as ergonomic already, when it is ergonomic for the person carrying, that word doesn't mean it is ergonomic for baby.
Basically if you are interested in it, look up the suggestions and safety issues before buying.
