Are ultrasounds and home fetal dopplers safe?

Let me preface this by saying I have two healthy children and a third on the way I had 2 ultrasounds with #1 (who is unmedicated for ADHD) and 5 (which includes 1 elective US) with #2 who doesn't seem to exhibit ADHD symptoms as her brother did at that age. This pregnancy, I'll be having multiple vaginal ultrasounds in addition to the normal ones due to cervical issues. I've been reading - nothing scientific - that ultrasounds, particularly vaginal ones, can be harmful to baby. And also that hoke fetal heart monitors are harmful to baby. Do you think this is true?

They haven't been able to find any evidence for this. They obviously haven't done any dedicated studies because no one would want to expose mothers to unnecessary harm but they've collected a lot of data

"While ultrasound is generally considered to be safe with very low risks, the risks may increase with unnecessary prolonged exposure to ultrasound energy, or when untrained users operate the device.

Expectant mothers should also be aware of purchasing over-the-counter fetal heartbeat monitoring systems (also called doptones). These devices should only be used by trained health care providers when medically necessary. Use of these devices by untrained persons could expose the fetus to prolonged and unsafe energy levels, or could provide information that is interpreted incorrectly by the user."

I have a home doppler. It's the same kind used by my ob and I have it for those instances when my anxiety gets the best of me. I've hardly used it because just having it and knowing I could use it if I needed helps me not worry so much. I had many many ultrasounds with my twins and I've had more then a few this pregnancy though they're finally starting to space out my appointments more now. My twins were fine and this baby is fine. Unless you're sitting there for hours at a time listening to a heartbeat there is literally no proven risk to your baby. And ultrasounds there is only one setting that has been shown to possibly cause an issue with overheating the fetus if used for too long, and that setting is only used when doctors needed to get a very up close and personal look at a small area, so again nothing to worry about.

Good grief people. I had a home Doppler I used almost every day and had 6.. Yes 6 ultrasounds my whole pregnancy. My son turned out healthy and completely fine. There are no studies concluding they are unsafe and clearly they didn't hurt my baby in anyway. 😒

A fetal Doppler shouldn't be awful. I'd leave the ultrasounds to the professionals though, and just occasional, when you're doctor sees fit. Every time I've been to the doctor so far I've gotten an ultrasound. I went in really late for my first appointment, 15 weeks, so they confirmed and dated it with an ultrasound then my second appointment was 18 weeks, anatomy scan. Then I just went at 22 weeks and got one because they couldn't get good pictures of her heart, she was just mooning them the whole time. So I've had one every appointment, I wouldn't have this last one if it wasn't for the heart thing. I'd leave it to just the few ultrasounds they do. But a fetal Doppler should be okay. It will help in times of worry.
