Is a nursing degree worth it?

I’ve been considering doing a 4 year nursing program at an accredited private college her in Southern California. I have a little bit of community college, like 1.5 years worth of credits. For anyone who’s a nurse with a bachelors degree…are you happy in your field? Do you enjoy your work? I have two young kids, one is 6 and the other is 2. I want to be in their lives as much as possible and I’ve been a stay at home mom for so long I’m almost scared to miss out and do something new. Was it worth it for you to get a nursing degree and do you like being a nurse? Thanks for all your answers.

I enjoy what I do, but I absolutely hate what healthcare has become. It’s a business and it’s not about people anymore. The pandemic brought to light a lot of the issues that have existed for quite some time and things have gotten exponentially worse since then. Lots of HCW are leaving the bedside. Working is a hospital is really, really hard right now. Administration sucks and the politics are out of control. Our patients suffer as a result. Morally, it can be hard to deal with a lot of times. Things are headed in a realllllyyyy bad direction. I’m not going to lie to you— I think about leaving my job every single day, as do most other nurses I know. I put in a lot of money and work in nursing school. I love my patients and I love my field and my specialty, but this is nothing like what I expected, nor is it anything like it was even 9 years ago when I started out. It’s so disheartening. Just something to think about.

So I’ve been a nurse for about 4 years. I’ve been doing hospital nursing my whole career, and I’ve recently decided hospital nursing is not for me. But the amazing thing about nursing is that there are so many different options within the field, so I can find a job doing something else!

Yes it’s worth it but it’s alot of work. Be prepared to have no free time and to really buckle down especially once in the program. 
Also, be prepared to pay for a lot more than just books but things like uniforms, drug test, access codes, testing software and everything constantly changing and not being consistent.
Also the test they have in nursing school is a lot different than test in the prerequisites.
I’m not telling you all of this to discourage you but to give you a heads up. In the end, it’s all worth it especially if this is the field you desire to be in.

I’m currently enrolled and on my second year. That was my worry as well I didn’t wanna miss anything, So what I did if it’s any help, I looked for a school with online programs. I have been doing that and it’s honestly the best I get to be with my kids and not worry about babysitters or anything. Now with my kids (6,4) headed back to school/preschool I will go on campus again then during summer I will go back online while they are home I did it like that last school year and it worked out great.
