How many minutes/hours a day breastfeeding?

I’ve been tracking my feeding times, my 6-week old is latched about 20 times a day for an elapsed total of about 3.5 to 4 hours of active feeding time in a 24 hour period, and yet my baby is still so hungry she is red-faced screaming crying and will eat another 8 to 12 ounces of formula over the course of the day. Is this normal? How much nursing time is reasonable?

Stop timing feeds!! Feed on demand. 
At 6weeks old they are most likely clusterfeeding, so keep switching sides.

Why are you being advised to top up with so much formula?? Surely that is going to affect your supply. What checks has your lactation consultant done- where did they train? The amount of time babies nurse is insane/ your family SHOULD NOT be judging you- formula is SO EASY they can't understand what it is like to be in your shoes

It sounds like you may be stretching babies tummy with formula and I'm turn making it so you don't supply enough. Are you pumping every time you give formula to tell your body to produce more? How old is the baby?

My first was constantly nursing. Like every hour for 30 minutes. I thought I would go insane. He ended up having a slight lactose intolerance and when I cut dairy from my diet it way cut down on his fussiness. 
My second is very stubborn about burping. She eats for 5 minutes and then I had to spend 30-40 minutes burping her or she would just fuss and want to eat until she threw everything up and we’d start all over.

I never tracked it, but I'd say my babies under 4mo on average spent about 8 hours a day nursing. But the bulk of that time was definitely in the evenings when my babies would want to nurse for several hours. 
My first born was by far my champion nurser though and probably spent more like 20 hrs a day latched on for food and comfort (unless she was away from me at daycare). My second was probably less - about 4-6 hrs or so a day. He was super easy.

A lot of nursing.. but could it be something in your diet hurting her stomach? Dairy can cause a lot of upset tummy’s
