Pacifier or thumb?

My LO is 3 months now and we didn’t use a pacifier from the beginning which was fine he wasn’t a fussy crier and didn’t really need it.

At 2 months he started putting his hand is his mouth and I started introducing a pacifier (orthodontic one) which he doesn’t take and I need to hold on so he can suck and spits out when I remove my hand.

Right now he’s a bit ill, had fever 2 days ago. And has been sucking his thumb since yesterday to soothe himself. I am against thumb sucking and want to use the pacifier.

Should I get a different pacifier shape? Or use a different brand of orthodontic shape? I’m thinking of bibs pacifier or chicco physio forma pacifier.

Pacifiers are expensive where I live. And I know I need to try all shapes to know which baby likes😬
