Would you buy a serious fixer upper to live in?
We went to view a house today. It's in a cul-de-sac (ALWAYS wanted to live in one), it's a BIG stand, huge garden potential. Nice area, the houses in this area typically sell for 1.5m upwards.
This lady is prepared to drop to 1.2m because the house needs work. She lost her partner earlier this year and I think she just lost interest... Some of the issues have obviously been around for longer but some you can see are new issues. Also, there was a TON of junk lying around (which will be removed) and she also had three Macaws and 20 rabbits, with rabbit poop literally every where, no grass at all and the Macaws have chewed the doors and all sorts. It was hard to look past the extreme mess, but I could.
It is a small house but because the stand size is so big, there's tons of space to expand. I've been thinking about it. We need to break down the wall between the bathroom and toilet (there's no toilet in the bathroom), we need to break down the one bedroom and that already creates additional space. Possibly put in a new tub in the bathroom and a new vanity.
The floors need to be redone, and one or two of the kitchen cabinets fixed.
Then the main bedroom can be split into two rooms, and then we just need to build on a new main room and an en-suit.
And then some repainting, some patching up, a hell of a good clean, a garden overhaul and then you're good.
Yes it's a lot of work and a lot of money, but considering the property prices in the area it will be worth it.
But my husband says no. Absolutely not and that's just that.
Am I out my mind thinking it's doable? I was really hoping that house was the one.
