What to think

Question

So I went to church today for the first time a Christian church and the whole sermon was basically about tithing and giving 10% and I’m not sure what to think I don’t know is it just about the money then he said it was OK if we didn’t give any coming to church was fine but he challenged us for 90 days to tithe. Are there any Christians here? What do you think about this like I said this is my first time and I don’t really know what to think if this is OK or not they were really nice but the whole sermon was about tithing and Abel and Caine. It’s fellowship church. Pastor ed young.

There are LOTS of denominations of Christianity, so don’t judge all churches or beliefs on this one sermon. If it didn’t feel like a good fit, try a different one. Giving to the church is normal though, yes. Our church collects an offering and, because we’re so small, those funds are genuinely needed for things like heat along with missionary work to help those in need.

It’s pretty normal, we had a day at church where they told us about it and then scripture in the Bible that talk about it as well. You are not required to do it at all only if you wish. Don’t feel obligated or feel pushed away.

Could be coincidence of it being the end of the year when you went. I'm Catholic and towards the end of the year the priest will have at least one homily about prayerfully considering either beginning or increasing our sacrificial gift for the weekly collection in the coming year. I wouldn't be turned off by it if it's your first time at that church.

There were times in my life where I was so broke that I couldn’t tithe and when the pastor would speak about tithing it would make me feel even worse.
I eventually found a church that doesn’t discuss tithing and they don’t pass around the money basket/bucket. If you wanted to tithe there were envelops in easy to spot places and it was just up to you.
If a church always talks about tithing and you feel like you’re being guilted into it then that may not be the church for you.

I went to that church once or twice with an ex boyfriend. Church is not for me.

I believe in it to some extent but that being said I think any amount is acceptable, not necessarily 10% of what you make. Times are tough. The churches have bills the same as any other business, they have workers and things to pay too. The money goes towards keeping the church open and running.
