Financial advice- saving money for education for special needs child

D

I know this is not controversial, I did post this is another group but I know CC has really intelligent people so I am cross posting

I am sorry if this seems ableist or offensive in anyway. That is truly not my intention. I know many autistic people grow up and do amazing things.

However- I also know autism is a disability and there’s a large chance my son may never be independent or a functioning member of society.

We have been saving for my sons college education since before he was even born. We put away 1,300 a month into a 529. He is 4 and has a little over 60k saved. We know how much college is now and we know it’s going to be ridiculously expensive by the time he’s 18.

My son is level one, and right now, we don’t know his trajectory. I have no idea if he has any sort of cognitive disabilities learning disabilities, or anything like that. Right now he’s a happy little boy but does struggle socially and with his communication

I would love to be like he’s fine he will go to college or trade school or whatever but the fact of the matter he may not. I wonder if putting the money towards college even makes sense right now. I almost feel like we should set up some sort of fund incase he can’t live independently and he has an account to lean on.

Is there even an account like that? Like he can access the money if I die? I should probably speak to a financial advisor or an accountant.

Would it be wrong to not save for his school anymore and really more so save for his future in other ways?

If you have a special needs child, did you continue ti save for school? anyway. That is truly not my intention. I know many autistic people grow up and do amazing things.
