Should I give him a vday gift?

I’ve been talking to this older guy for about 2 weeks now. He’s 35, I’m 25. He went silent on me for about 3 days. I thought he ghosted me. He called me today and said he had food poisoning and went to the hospital. I was skeptical when he told me because it said active under the messages on IG, but sometimes it will say someone is active when they are not. On the other hand, I do believe him because when I last spoke to him he was coming from a restaurant and I didn’t hear from him since then. He told me that he doesn’t ghost people and that I was the 2nd person he called and that he’s been thinking about me.

We haven’t talked about if we will spend valentine day together partially because he’s been sick and I didn’t want to bring it up until he did. I did buy him two books the other day and he told me today that he reads all the time. I’m not too pressed about him giving me something since we aren’t technically together, but I wanted to give him these books for my appreciation. On the flip side I don’t want to look stupid giving him something and nothing in return. Btw he has paid for dates and paid for my gas in the past. Unsure what to do.
