Irregular cycles... When to take HPT?

I have irregular periods and I know I ovulated, since I got my LH surge and we had lots of sex :) so now I'm a little unsure as to when I should test? How many days should I wait post ovulation? Any advice help etc. I just don't want to spend a ton of money on HPT's :) thanks ladies!!!
