What describes your relationship with your SO's mother?

My so mother is just very judgements about who I am and what I'm doing with my life. Yet she doesn't care to listen. He's an only child and no one will be good enough for him in her eyes.

There is no relationship with my mother in law. My husband cut her out of our lives after all the stunts and lies she's pulled. As he says "our children will have one grandmother" meaning my mom.

My mother in law acts like a five year old. Has temper tantrums when she doesn't get her way, has to be the center of attention, acts like her shit don't stink! Can't stand her.

My husband is a total mama's boy and acts like a completely different person when she's around. She coddles him and treats him like a baby. He's 30 years old!

She and I are friendly towards each other but I know she gossips about me to his sisters all the time. She thinks I'm controlling which couldn't be any further from the truth. The problem is, she was able to control everything he did until he met me. When I met him he grew up and he no longer lets mommy make his decisions for him so that drives her crazy.

I always had this ideal picture in my head that my mother-in-law would be my second mom and we'd be super close. I pictured both of our families getting together every year for holidays and all that. It took me awhile to make peace with it but I'm finally content with the decision that it's ok to be "acquaintance friendly" with her and we do not need to be best friends. Prior to this, I used to try so hard and get so frustrated because I couldn't figure out how to get her to like me. Now it's so much less stressful and it's made our marriage a lot better too.

Wow! I did not mean to write that much! Haha I just wanted to share my MIL experience.

Unfortunately I've never met my SO's mom. She passed away when he was 11.. I've heard all about her just wish I had the chance to meet such a woman that birthed an amazing man.

I couldn't ask for or be any luckier in this department. He is an only child and there are things that TOTALLY annoy me about her, but there's tons that annoy me about my own mom, lol! That's just relationships in general. But she adapted my kids and is VERY good to us. ?
