Varicose veins "down there"

During my last pregnancy, I developed some knots on my outter labia and in the crease of my leg. The doctor said they were varicose veins. They got worse as my pregnancy progressed, and never went away. They look terrible and can be painful sometimes. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to fix it?
